The text is that of the earlier, 1818 edition – usage of which is defended in Anne Mellor's "Choosing a Text of Frankenstein to Teach" but I would like to have seen some consideration of the legitimacy of the later, 1831 edition, especially in the context of a more pessimistic novel like The Last Man. ( )Īlthough some would call it not a "great" novel, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is certainly one of the most important novels in the history of women's literature, and this importance is seen from the generally excellent supplemental essays included in the Norton Critical Edition (ISBN 9780393979381). Mary Shelley teaches important lessons while still captivating the reader and almost forcing them to finish the story, and thus this book, to me, is such an integral part of our world. By messing with absolutes, Frankenstein is forced to live a life of remorse and guilt for all those who he caused pain to as a result of his curiousness getting just a bit out of hand. Once somebody is absolutely dead, there is no bringing them back, yet Victor Frankenstein messes with absolutes. Victor Frankenstein creates what he deems "a monster" as a result of his attempts to bring back life from the dead, yet we learn that you can't mess with absolutes. The book also focuses on an important message of not letting curiousness go too far. This book teaches an important lesson that no matter what a person looks like, everybody is still the same on the inside, which to me is one of the most important lessons to be learned by today's society, and thus is the reason that this is such a great, powerful story. Just because the monster looks somewhat different, it's not his fault and it doesn't exclude him from having feelings just like every ordinary human would.

Frankenstein is a timely novel in today's society as well. Mary Shelley describes the common everyday situation of feeling like an outcast and struggling to fit in. Frankenstein is the perfect combination of far fetched fantasy and relatable situations. Very rarely do I find a book that I can't seem to put down, but this book was one.
